MOOD + PERFORMANCE

Balanced Mood + Improved sleep

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SLEEP QUALITY AND FOCUS.

Stress can riddle your body with the hormone cortisol.

Cortisol is the hormone that helps you wake up in the morning and is also the one that is released as a flight or fight reaction to dangerous situations. High levels of stress will create an overactive mind that will result in a restless night’s sleep, a lack of focus, heightened anxiety, insomnia, memory issues and depression and mood swings.

Research has also demonstrated the connection between good gut health and sleep. So here are some tips that will help you feel calmer, more focused and support a more restful 2024:
* Deep Breathe Work – breathing from your core.

* Meditation – This removes things that trigger your stress levels and calm your mind.

* Outdoor Exercise – Typically in nature you are exposed to more oxygen, so getting out and taking a walk in the park or on the beach can help you destress.

* Herbal Remedies – There are so many great herbs that have a calming effect on your body and mind. These include lavender, chamomile, ashwagandha, magnesium, 5-HTP and vitamin B6.

There is also magical little succulent plant that has recently made headlines and is native to South Africa called Sceletium Tortuosum, it is considered a nootropic (also known as a smart drug / adaptogen) and has been used for centuries by the Khoi San to induce relaxation, reduce stress, enhance a positive mood and cognitive function and suppress appetite on long hunting trips.

Modern research and clinical trials now support the effectiveness of this incredible little plant and have proven that it is natural selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) or anti-depressant. Sceletium is not habit-forming and does not result in withdrawal symptoms common with tapering off pharmaceutical antidepressant and anxiolytic drugs. It may be combined with other supplements to help support stable emotions and a positive mental outlook, such as 5-HTP and vitamin B6, although caution is warranted when recommending Sceletium to patients who are taking antidepressant or anti-anxiety medications.

* Support your gut – gut health has a direct impact on your sleeping habits. Research supports that consistent amounts of probiotics can actually help create a steady sleep schedule. Your gut produces the hormones that help you sleep (melatonin) and the hormone that wakes you up (cortisol). Taking care of your gut will improve your sleep.

Tips for restful sleep:

* Set a consistent sleep schedule.

* Create a peaceful bedroom.

* Maintain a healthy diet – include honey, whole grains, herbal teas, leafy greens, yoghurts, oats, chickpeas, nuts and beans.

Things to try avoid before bed, that can trigger a restless night:

* Limit stimulants after 14h00 – caffeine and other sugary drinks or snacks can keep you active long after your bed time.

* Turn off all electronic devices an hour before bed.

* Read before you turn your light off. This will help your mind relax.

* Don’t clock watch - try avoid looking at the time, it is recommended to turn off all digital clocks that might cause a distraction
